With just two rounds remaining to be played in the annual Western Sydney Regional Veteran Golfers Association interclub series the pressure is mounting on both clubs (Club of the Year) and Players (Player of the Year) to score well and clinch these prestigious awards.
Glenmore Heritage Valley are seeking to maintain their impressive record in the Club of the Year competition and defend the trophy they have secured for the last two year – they lead the field with a total of 820 stableford points.\
Hot on their heels is the ever strong Richmond sitting on 817 and Wallacia with 813. Following are Dunheved (796), Leonay (780), Penrith (763), Stonecutters (747) and Springwood (687).
Most clubs managed to catch up points on Glenmore in last Mondays interclub challenge hosted by Stonecutters Ridge. On the day Michael Harrison, Lynette Luttinger, Gary Willett and Ian Jordan compiled a total of 130 points to give Richmond victory, but more importantly a valuable 18 points ahead of Glenmore.
Dunheved secured second place with 129 points followed by Wallacia (125), Penrith (122), Leonay (121), Stonecutters (116) and Springwood (109). The effect of the recent rains certainly showed in the team results – usually the average team score is between 130 and 139, at Stonecutters it was just 121.
The Player of the Year contests for both the men and the ladies is even closer than the teams with multiple players sharing the lead with 2 rounds to go. It must also be remembered that home games cannot count towards a players overall score in these competitions, hence Richmond and Springwood have only one more game to improve their total scores, while members of the other six clubs can count both rounds.
In the men's Player of the Year, Glenn Brown (Dunheved), John Searle (Glenmore) and James Bullock (Richmond) are on top with 106 points each. Close behind is Steven Loader (Stonecutters) with 105 and then a swag of players on 103 – Michael Harrison, Karl Lozier, Rodney Tuckwell (all Richmond), Warren Husband and Robert Lewis (both Wallacia).
Three players also share the lead in the ladies Player of the Year. With 93 points each are Julie Berg (Penrith), Lynette Luttinger and Jane Mackie (both Richmond). These ladies have a 5 point buffer before we find Elaine Williams (Dunheved) Juanita Robb (Glenmore) and Christine Hoppe (Wallacia) all on 88.
While the wet conditions somewhat restricted the individual scoring last Monday at Stonecutters Ridge, some pairs combined to produce very creditable 2BBB team scores.
Best of the days were Eddie Chambers and Wayne Beesley representing Dunheved with 42 points to lead the men's field just ahead of Wallacia's pair of Stephen Snell and John Woods (41).
The ladies 2BBB was just as close but only featured one club. Richmond took all the prizes – Suzanne Still and Lynette Luttinger winning with 36 ahead of clubmates Jane Mackie and Rhonda Sedger with 36.
It was the individual scores that illustrated the affect of recent weather on play – only one player of the 129 who participated played to their handicap and scored 36 points. This was Glenn Brown representing Dunheved in the men's B grade competition. He finished ahead of Peter Cromer (Wallacia) on 34 points.
The men's C grade was not far behind, with Leonay's Michael Hughes amassing 35 points to narrowly edge out Michael Harrison (Richmond) by a single points. A toatl of 35 was also enough to secure the men's A Grade prize – this went to RickWilson of Penrith, well ahead of Ian Jordan (Richmond) with 31.
In the ladies singles event, Jean Paterson on 23 points was just ahead of Julie Berg on 22, both players representing Penrith.
The next WSRVGA interclub event is to be hosted by Richmond Golf Club on Tuesday September 23rd.
Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association stage of its 2025 Interclub Challenge series at Wallacia Country club Friday 18th July. A total of 133 willing golfers braved the chilly morning with all but one outlasting a light shower to complete the 18 holes.
Knowledge of the home course once again proved most beneficial with current and former Wallacia members claiming a swag of the prizes on offer, including the much coveted Team Event. The best four stableford scores for Wallacia were provided by Steve Francis (36 points), Stephen Small (36), Martin Berg (35) and Julian Cuff (35), for a team total of 142.
This is the first time this year that Wallacia have finished ahead of Richmond (138) and Glenmore (128). These in turn were followed by Leonay (126), Dunheved (122), Penrith (11&), Stonecutters (111) and Springwood (101).
The best score on the day was, however, achieved by James Bullock representing Richmond. His 39 individual points secured him the top prize in the men's A Grade competition but also the men's 2BBB top prize with partner Tommy Mathias, with the pair amassing 45 points to finish just ahead of the Wallacia pair of Steven Francis and Steven Small on a combined 44 points. Third place in the men's team event was taken by another Wallacia duo – Martin Berg and Warren Husband combining for a total of 42 points.
The two Steves – Francis and Small – also finished just behind James Bullock in the men's A Grade, Francis edging out Small for second on a countback after both finished with 36 points.
In contrast with the men, the mixed teams of Glenmore dominated the medley 2BBB competition, but only just. Medley teams can be either man/woman or two women.
Greg Garland and Judy Towns got the major prize with 39 points, but only on a countback ahead of Karen Klein and Christine Hoppe of Wallacia. Julie and John Edwards (Glenmore) were in third, a single point behind.
The ladies singles competition was taken out by Julie Sutcliffe (Leonay) with 35 points, ahead of Jullie Berg (Penrith) on 33 and Julie Edwards (Glenmore) with 31 points.
Wallacia also dominated in the remaining men's competitions. Peter Curtis led the field in B Grade with 34 points, but only on a countback from Richmond's Rodney Tuckwell. John Pagett from Dunheved finished closely behind with 32 points.
In the men's C Grade, Julian Cuff *Wallacia) edged ahead of clubmate Dave Coombes on a countback after both had score 35 points. They were followd by Rodney Dillworthy (Richmond) with 33.
The next WSRVGA event will be hosted by Stonecutters Ridge on Monday August 11th.
A very cold Leonay Golf Club hosted the latest Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association latest interclub competition round last Tuesday. 141 dedicated golfers braved the early chill to tee off at 8:00am.
Glenmore Heritage Valley again showed they are determined to retain their Club of the Year title with their four most successful players – John Searle (41 points), Tim Dawes (37), Gavin Johnson (37) and Sydney Barwick (34) – amassing an impressive 149 stableford points. Leonay were close behind on 147, followed by Richmond (141) and Stonecutters Ridge (140). Penrith(139), Wallacia (136), Dunheved (136) and Springwood (121) completed the field.
In the 2-ball competitions, The Leonay pair of Wes Kwasnik and Hans Schneider (46 points) took out the major prize in the men's competition, but Glenmore returned home with all the other prizes. Greg Garland and John Searle (45 points) were runners-up in the mens' pairs, while Tim Dawes and Dorothy Wilmington won the medley competition with 42 points on a count-back from fellow Glenmore members Juanita Robb and Judy Towns, also with 42 points and also on a count-back.
The prizes were spread amongst many more clubs in the individual competitions.

The C Grade competition was also taken out by Leonay, with Grany Sutcliffe scoring 36 points to finish ahead of Kim Stockbridge (Stonecutters, 34) and Ian Gibson (Wallacia 33).
The next interclub event will be hosted by Wallacia on Friday July 18th.
Western Sydney Veteran Golfers Association continued their 2025 season on Wednesday – with Glenmore Heritage Valley hosting the competition.
It should be no surprise to anyone that Glenmore, champion club for at least the past two seasons, dominated the results at their home course – they managed to take out 3 of the 4 indiviual first prizes as well as figuring in both 2 ball categories.
For Glenmore, Dorothy and Glenn Willmington won the 2BBB medley competition , although only on a countback, from the Springwood couple of Margaret and Jim Brownsell after both couples finished with 36 points.
The men's 2BBB was a slightly different story, with Frank Harvey and Graham Wallis (Dunheved Golf Club) edging out the home team of Syd Barwick and Bill Leydecker by a single stableford point – 45 to 44.
Glenmore also dominated the individual events on their home course – with the exception of the men's A grade event. Martin Berg (Wallacia) took out the A grade title with 36 points, just ahead of Dunheved's Larry Hayes with 35.
The remaining individual competitions were all won by Glenmore players.
In the ladies competition, Juanita Robbs (Glenmore0 edged out Margaret Brownsell (Springwood) on a countback after both finished with 27 stableford points.
In the men's A grade competition, Martin Berg (Wallacia) with 36 points finished a single point ahead of Larry Hayes (Dunheved) on 35.
The B grade competition was taken out by Todd Tamruksa (Glenmore of course) with 38 points, two ahead of Wallacia's Warren Husband on 36.
Syd Barwick led the way for Glenmore in the C Grade event, finishing a single point ahead of Christopher Thorley (Dunheved) 34 to 33.
Also after three rounds the Player of the Year and Club of the Year competitions begin to become significant.
The Player of the Year will be the person with the best 3 stableford scores over the 8 rounds of competition (excluding their home game). After 3 round Robert Lewis (Wallacia, 103 stableford points) has a good lead over Rod Tuckwell (Richmond, 98) and Andrew Burns (Leonay, 97).
In the ladies competition Kahnna Tarana (Springwood, 80 points) ha a commanding lead as the only lady to have played all three rounds. At present leads Suzanne Still (Richmond) and Christine Hoppe (Wallacia) both who have 63 points, but both also after 2 games.
The next interclub event is to hosted by Leonay Golf Club on June 17th.
Fielding their full complement of players for only the second time in two years, Wallacia achieved their best away from home performance in the same period to strongly challenge their much larger rivals at the WSRVGA Interclub Challenge hosted by Penrith Golf Club last Tuesday.
The much coveted team prize was taken out by Richmond – with Michael Harrison, Dean Fleming, Ian Jordan and Rodney Tuckwell amassing a combined total of 143 stableford points to edge out Dunheved on a countback. Wallacia finished third on 140 points, narrowly ahead of Glenmore Heritage Valley and Stonecutters Ridge on 139 each.
Debora Moussa and Julia Smith made the most of their home course knowledge to claim the medley 2-ball prize for Penrith with an impressive 46 points. They were followed by Denise and Ross Chant from Wallacia on 44 points.
Not to be outdone, the men's 2-ball winners also managed 46 points – achieved by the Wallacia pair of Jose Donoso and Robert Lewis. Second place was taken by the Stonecutters Ridge duo of Terrance Chong and Gregory Bax (43 points).
The strong Richmond and Dunheved teams dominated the individual competitions, albeit with scores that tend to indicate that in the challenge between course and player, the course won.
In the men's A Grade (handicaps 0-16) Ian Jordan of the Richmond Club secured the top prize with 35 points on a countback from Dunheved's Satya Deo, also 35 points, who edge out several other players also on a countback.
Richmond was also successful in the men's B Grade (handicaps 17-22) with Michael Harrison accumulating 37 points. Second place went to John Mathews (Glenmore Heritage Valley) on a countback with 35 points.
The countbacks continued in the men's C Grade division (handicaps 23 and above) with Dean Fleming (Richmond) and Robert Lewis (Wallacia) separated from other players who all scored 35 points.
The Ladies individual contest was a little clearer with Elaine Williams hitting the best score of the day – 38 points – to claim the top prize for Dunheved, ahead of clubmate Clea Bane who snuck into second place with 35 points, but only after yet another countback.
The next match in the interclub challenge series will be hosted by Glenmore Heritage Valley on Wednesday May 7th.
Tuesday saw the opening round of the Western Sydney Region Veterans Golfers Association (WSRVGA) 2025 interclub competition at Dunheved Golf Club.
Perfect weather and a very well presented course provided the perfect opportunity for the veteran golfers of western Sydney to show their worth – unfortunately in most cases the course came out on top.
A feature of the presentations was the awarding of major prizes from the 2024 season. Glenmore Heritage Valley were presented with their Club of the Year trophy while the two players of the year, Paul Fairbrother (Dunheved) and Lynette Luttinger (Richmond) received trophies, vouchers and shirts jointly provided by WSRVGA and NSWVGA.
Also feted was long time Richmond stalwart Noel Byles, who presented with life membership of WSRVGA in recognition of his years of service to both the Richmond club and the WSRVGA as both a club representative and Vice President.
Glenmore again showed they are a force to be reckoned with in striving for Club of the Year – their best four players accruing a total of 149 stableford points for the club to take an early lead in this competition for 2025. They were followed on the leaderboard by Richmond (136). Leonay (134), Wallacia (132), Dunheved (131), Stonecutters Ridge (129), Penrith (129) and Springwood (117). The successful Glenmore team was made up of Anthony Bowden, Gavin Johnson, Noel Guillaume and Tim Dawes.
The closeness of the various competitions is clearly evident in the results.
The 2BBB Medley was taken out by Debra Moussa and Maxine Rassmussen, with 42 points on a countback from Christine Hoppe and Noel Hoppe also on 42 points but also on a countback from the third place finishers.
The Men's B grade was similar, with Glenmore's Alan Bain (33 points) finishing ahead of Wallacia's Terry Sharpe (33 points), both on countbacks.
The Women's individual was yet another feast of countbacks with Penrith's Julie Berg edging out clubmate Debra Moussa after both finished with 33 points.
Glenmore's lead in the Club of the Year is hardly surprising when the men's 2BBB results are scrutinised. Their leading pair of Anthony Bowden and Keith Strathdee combined for an impressive 45 points, one more than their clubmates Alan Bain and Gavin Johnson who secured on yet another countback.
The dominance of the Glenmore players also showed in the men's A and C grade individual competitions, with Gavin Johnson (Glenmore, 38 points) taking A grade ahead of Ken Powell (Richmond, 36), and in C Grade Anthony Bowden (Glenmore 42) having a good lead over Hugh Renny (Leonay 37).
The next interclub challenge is scheduled for Penrith Golf Club on Tuesday April 1st.
